Gretchen has been teaching since 1993. She started in the Kansas City, Missouri School District working at Crispus Attucks Communication and Writing Magnet School. She came to St. Paul's in 1997. She taught two years in the Primary Division and has been teaching third grade since the 1999 -2000 school year.

Gretchen is always looking for opportunities to improve her teaching and to bring new ideas to the classroom. In 2003 she traveled to the Amazon Rainforest in Peru to learn more about the rainforest. One of the ways this enhances the third grade rainforest unit is by discussing the people and culture of the rainforest inhabitants. In 2008 she received a National Endowment for the Humanities- Landmark of American History and Culture grant to study American History in New York City.
