Roland has been teaching secondary English since 1987 including thirteen years at St. Mary's High School in Independence. He joined the faculty of St. Paul's in 2005. He lives in Independence with his wife, Brenda, a retired English and Speech teacher.

Since the autumn of 2007, Roland has written and hosted a weekly trivia game at the Brick, a downtown Kansas City bar and grill. Roland has appeared in nearly twenty community theatre productions with the City Theatre of Independence. He has an extensive record, tape and compact disc collection, which includes a vast array of Christmas music.
