BS in journalism and PR/advertising, University of Central Missouri; MS in journalism, University of Kansas; coursework in English literature at UMKC

Mr. Engle wanted to be a writer since he was a tyke, and in third or fourth grade he actually produced a "book." He has spent most of his career at newspapers, starting as editor of a small-town daily when he was 21. He has worked at The Kansas City Star about 15 years, initially as a weekend copy editor.

Now a writer and editor in The Star's features department, he sometimes gets to interview famous people, including his celebrity lookalike, John Lithgow. His goal is to interview all surviving members of "The Brady Bunch" (two down, six to go).

He has been teaching creative writing at St. Paul's -- and having flashbacks to his own middle school days -- since January 2009.
