Educational Background:
BA in Education; MA in Curriculum & Instruction, UMKC
Vernie Nerstheimer has been teaching elementary school for the past 20 years. He started his teaching career in the Shawnee Mission School District teaching 5th grade. Throughout his 11 years in the Shawnee Mission District, he taught all the upper grades including a year of teaching a 4th and 5th grade split class. In 2002, Vernie started at St. Paul's teaching 4th grade. He is now in his second year as our school Librarian. He really enjoys teaching because each day brings something totally new and different. The enthusiasm and interest of the kids really keeps him on his toes.
Most people don't know this about Vernie, but he spent three summers working in Sitka, Alaska in the fishing industry. He feels this has contributed to his love of nature and the outdoors.
Vernie's wife, Kristy, is also an educator who currently teaches kindergarten in the Shawnee Mission District. They have two beautiful daughters. Addie (7th grade) enjoys reading, playing the violin, and the piano. Maya (4thgrade) loves math, swimming and playing the piano. The Nerstheimers love spending quality time together biking, camping, traveling and sailing, Vernie's newfound hobby.
