Star of the Week which provides opportunities for each child to be recognized and valued as a unique individual
Dynamic Storytellers, an opportunity for each child to bring a special guest into the classroom to read to the class

Lower School English Language Arts (ELA) Overview
The foundations of the lower school language arts essential learning goals are reading, writing, grammar, speaking, listening, and spelling. These components are integrated into all core subjects. Students are taught to develop and utilize multiple strategies in understanding quality fiction and nonfiction texts. The writing process is stressed throughout lower school and practiced daily across the curriculum. Writing opportunities include: paragraphs, journals, poetry, creative writing and research reports. In each grade level language arts is taught in a variety of ways such as small guided reading groups and whole class instruction.
  • Read and comprehend grade appropriate fiction and nonfiction texts.
  • Summarize and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text.
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.
  • Write on specific tasks, with a purpose, and for an audience.
  • Write, edit, revise, and publish narrative, persuasive, informative, explanatory, and poetry texts.
  • Research a topic to write and present information in a variety of ways.
  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing and speaking.
Essential Learning Goals Lower School Math Overview
The foundations of the lower school math program are problem solving, concept application, and using multiple ways to solve problems. Math concepts are presented in our essential learning goals in a progression from concrete to abstract. Teachers use multiple methods of instruction to appeal to every learning style. Each student may require different methods to practice and master math skills in order to reach his or her highest mathematical abilities.
  • Fluently add and subtract multi digit numbers.
  • Understand place value to round, compare, order, and write numbers in a variety of forms.
  • Understand properties of multiplication and division their relationship to each other.
  • Solve multi-step word problems using the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Multiply and divide numbers up to 144.
  • Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.
  • Solve problems involving measurement of elapsed time, volume, and mass.
  • Demonstrate understanding of different shapes, angles, and lines.
Essential Learning Goals Lower School Social Studies Overview
The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people understand the importance of making informed decisions for the public good. Students begin to recognize themselves as citizens in a culturally diverse, democratic society.

The Lower School Essential Learning Goals focus on 7 Themes including Geography, Culture, Economics, Government, History, Global Connections and Tools of Inquiry. These themes provide a foundation for engaged citizenship and an awareness of the world around them.
  • Read and construct maps to identify important geographical features
  • Explain how cultural and environmental characteristics change over time
  • Compare the benefits and costs of individual choices and how they influence the economy
  • Identify and explain the functions of the three branches of government
  • Understand the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy
  • Compare life in specific historical time periods to life today including the expeditions of Lewis and Clark, life on the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails, and Westward Expansion
  • Apply knowledge, skills, and understanding to address cultural, social, economic, and civic issues
  • Utilize a variety of primary and secondary sources including artifacts to research and develop claims in response to compelling questions
Essential Learning Goals Lower School Science Overview
The primary purpose of science is to help young people apply skills that promote developing questions, making observations and measurements, and communicating their findings with others. Students begin to recognize themselves as scientists who can solve problems and make connections in the world around them.

Lower School Essential Learning Goals are broken into four domains: Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science and Engineering Design. These domains provide a foundation for students to actively engage in methods of scientific inquiry.
  • Understand that the size of a force depends on a variety of factors and they can be measured
  • Understand that energy is present whenever there are moving objects, sound, light, and heat, and it can be moved from place to place
  • Know that an object can be seen when light reflected from its surface enters the eyes
  • Recognize the importance of a healthy ecosystem to meet the needs of all species in the Rainforest
  • Analyze earth's systems including the universe and its stars, natural hazards, weather, and climate
  • Actively engage in the eight science and engineering practices throughout all units of study
