Grade Highlights

  • Students move to Middle School gaining independence through changing of classes every period, therefore experiencing a variety of teachers and all of their 6th grade classmates throughout each day.
  • Anchor Experience to St. Louis with classmates and faculty.
  • King Arthur integrated thematic unit culminating with a knighting ceremony and medival feast.
  • An opportunity to experience student government through home room representation on Student Council.
  • Older buddies to Kindergarten students, sharing in many experiences, including the study of Africa together.
Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) Overview
The middle school Essential Learning Goals are designed for students to comprehend and evaluate complex texts across a range of types and disciplines. The students construct effective arguments, discern a speaker's key points, request clarification and ask relevant questions. Students articulate their own ideas, build on others' ideas, and confirm that they have been understood. Students demonstrate command of Standard English and acquire and use a wide range of vocabulary. These Essential Learning Goals are integrated into all subject areas.
  • Determine a theme or central idea of a text (literature or informational text) and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
  • Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot.
  • Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.
  • Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text.
  • Write a narrative piece to establish and maintain a formal style.
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • Gather relevant information from multiple credible sources; quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism.
Speaking & Listening:
  • Come to discussions prepared having read or studied required material; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the topic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion.
  • Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes.
  • Use knowledge of language and its conventions when speaking or listening.
Essential Learning Goals Middle School Math Overview
The Essential Learning Goals are developed to stress not only procedural skills but conceptual understanding of mathematic principles. Middle school provides instruction in the areas of Number Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement and Data Analysis & Probability. The instruction guides students in ways of representing numbers, showing relationships among numbers, number systems, meaning of operations and how they relate to one another, and practice in computing fluently. Students use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships and work to understand patterns, relations, and functions in all mathematical skill areas.

* Students who meet specific course criteria may choose to take high school Geometry through the Hybrid Learning Consortium.
Pre Algebra:
  • Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
  • Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world problems.
  • Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
  • Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.
Essential Learning Goals Middle School Social Studies Overview
The National Council for the Social Studies defines social studies as: "...the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.

The Social Studies Essential Learning Goals are divided into 7 themes: Geography, Culture, Economics, Government, History, Global Connections and Tools of Inquiry. These strands provide the framework needed to educate students for the challenges of citizenship in a democracy and increasingly interconnected global community.
  • Characteristics of early river civilizations, Greek/Roman empires, Europe in the Middle Ages, and African Empires
  • Knowledge of how cultural patterns influence daily life in the past
  • Use geography to interpret the past, explain the present, and plan for the future
  • Economic decisions affect the well-being of individuals, businesses and society
  • Civic virtues and democratic principles in the school and community settings
  • Global connections among events and developments in the larger historical context and present day
Essential Learning Goals Middle School Science Overview
The Next Generation Science Standards suggest that Science Education should reflect the interconnected nature of science as it is practiced and experienced in the real world. The NGSS state, "The framework is designed to help realize a vision for education in the sciences and engineering in which students, over multiple years of school, actively engage in scientific and engineering practices and the core ideas in these fields."

Science Standards are categorized into Disciplinary Ideas broken into four domains, Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science and Engineering Design. In the sixth grade, all four disciplines are covered in the Essential Learning Goals. In seventh grade the focus is on Life Science and Engineering Design where as in eighth grade the content covered is from the discipline of Physical Science and Engineering design.

In all three years of Middle School the Science and Engineering Practices are the overall umbrella of the learning of the content. These practices describe behaviors that scientists engage in as they investigate and build models and theories about the natural world. It is in the exploration of these practices that science is being done in the classroom.
  • Understanding and giving examples of Newton's Laws of Motion
  • Knowing that atoms are the basic structure of all matter
  • Becoming fluent in measuring in metric units
  • Understanding that Ecosystems are dynamic in nature
  • Looking at the independent relationships in an ecosystem and how matter and energy flow through a food web
  • Realizing the impact of greenhouse gases on the weather and climate
  • Understanding the impact water has on weather, global movements, temperature and density changes and erosion
  • Designing, developing, and optimizing the design solution in engineering design
  • Being active in Science and Engineering Practices
