Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) Overview
The middle school Essential Learning Goals are designed for students to comprehend and evaluate complex texts across a range of types and disciplines. The students construct effective arguments, discern a speaker's key points, request clarification and ask relevant questions. Students articulate their own ideas, build on others' ideas, and confirm that they have been understood. Students demonstrate command of Standard English and acquire and use a wide range of vocabulary. These Essential Learning Goals are integrated into all subject areas.
Reading:
  • Cite several pieces of textual evidence and draw inferences to support analysis of what the text says.
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings.
  • Compare and contrast a fictional portrait of a time, place, or character and a historical account of the same period as a means of understanding of how authors of fiction use or alter history.
  • Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text.
  • Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author distinguishes his or her position from that of others.
Writing:
  • Write texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.
Speaking & Listening:
  • Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify claims and findings and emphasize salient points.
  • Use knowledge of language and its conventions when speaking or listening.
Essential Learning Goals Middle School Math Overview
The Essential Learning Goals are developed to stress not only procedural skills but conceptual understanding of mathematic principles. Middle school provides instruction in the areas of Number Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement and Data Analysis & Probability. The instruction guides students in ways of representing numbers, showing relationships among numbers, number systems, meaning of operations and how they relate to one another, and practice in computing fluently. Students use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships and work to understand patterns, relations, and functions in all mathematical skill areas.

* Students who meet specific course criteria may choose to take high school Geometry through the Hybrid Learning Consortium.
Algebra:
  • Interpret the structure of mathematical expressions: variable, polynomial, exponential.
  • Write expressions and equations in equivalent forms to solve problems.
  • Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials, rational and radical expressions.
  • Understand solving equations and inequalities in one variable and explain the reasoning.
Essential Learning Goals Middle School Social Studies Overview
The National Council for the Social Studies defines social studies as: "...the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.

The Social Studies Essential Learning Goals are divided into 7 themes: Geography, Culture, Economics, Government, History, Global Connections and Tools of Inquiry. These strands provide the framework needed to educate students for the challenges of citizenship in a democracy and increasingly interconnected global community.
  • Characteristics of societies in the Americas, Europe, and West Africa during the Age of Exploration and Encounter
  • Early arrivals of Europeans and Africans in the Americas, and how they interacted with Native Americans, and the characteristics of colonial society in North America
  • Causes and effects of the American Revolution and the foundational principles of American Democracy
  • The creation of the American political system, the US Constitution, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship
  • Causes of US territorial expansions, changes between the North and South, and origins of reform movements in the United States
  • Causes and effects of the Civil War, and the successes and failures of Reconstruction
Essential Learning Goals Middle School Science Overview
The Next Generation Science Standards suggest that Science Education should reflect the interconnected nature of science as it is practiced and experienced in the real world. The NGSS state, "The framework is designed to help realize a vision for education in the sciences and engineering in which students, over multiple years of school, actively engage in scientific and engineering practices and the core ideas in these fields."

Science Standards are categorized into Disciplinary Ideas broken into four domains, Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science and Engineering Design. In the sixth grade, all four disciplines are covered in the Essential Learning Goals. In seventh grade the focus is on Life Science and Engineering Design where as in eighth grade the content covered is from the discipline of Physical Science and Engineering design.

In all three years of Middle School the Science and Engineering Practices are the overall umbrella of the learning of the content. These practices describe behaviors that scientists engage in as they investigate and build models and theories about the natural world. It is in the exploration of these practices that science is being done in the classroom.
  • All living things are made up of cells that decide the structure and function of the organism
  • Organisms reproduce either sexually or asexually and transfer the genetic information to their offspring
  • Variations of inherited traits between parent and offspring arise from genetic differences that result from a subset of chromosomes inherited
  • Natural Selection leads to the predominance of certain traits in a population
  • Systems of the body play specific roles in the development of processes that are essential to human life
  • Designing, developing, and optimizing the design solution in engineering design
  • Being active in Science and Engineering Practices
