Building a School Within a School

The Transformation: Middle School, Library, Art Space, Site Development

In Summer One, the third floor of the south building will be completely remodeled to create a distinctive Middle School that serves the unique needs of our oldest students. The transformation of this floor will provide additional space for our middle schoolers to investigate and explore their interests, giving them critical opportunities for choice and expression while fostering their curiosity and creativity.

We know that in order to succeed in high school and in life in the 21st century, our students must be able to work well independently and with others. Through the addition of flexible learning hubs, maker spaces, an expanded science lab, and more, this renovation will give them increased opportunities to develop those skills – both socio-emotionally and academically.

Additional changes in Summer One will include an essential fire suppression system and remodeled school entrance.

Library in the Heart of the School

We will continue our strong tradition of an excellent library by relocating this space, and the hundreds of books that fill it, to the second floor. Updated furnishings will provide both quiet nooks for reading and modern collaborative spaces for group work. The space will also include breakout rooms for book clubs and community meetings, serving as a hub for the strong sense of community that characterizes St. Paul’s.

Third Floor Flexible Learning Hub

These creative spaces will allow students to work on class and self-directed projects with a variety of innovative resources like 3-D printers, a green screen and audio/visual equipment, and present those projects to peers and the community.

Third Floor Commons: A space for community

A commons area makes up the heart of the middle school. This flexible learning space provides ample room for our students and faculty to come together in all-group activities, like our hallmark daily chapel, and in collaborative, small group learning.

Science Lab: Doubling in size!

In the summer of 2017, we invested more than $100,000 in curriculum and professional development to jumpstart our school-wide STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) initiative and improve overall project-based learning. To accommodate this necessary pedagogical shift, we need additional STEM spaces across all grade levels.

With an enhanced science lab, our budding scientists and Science Olympians will have access to the latest equipment and experiences, and more room to build, create and tinker.
