Pre-K Students Explore Coding Basics

Last week, Pre-K students learned computer science basics through several fun Coding Week activities. First, students explored position and spatial sense as they listened to the book, The Birthday Surprise by Eric Carle. This book does a great job of reinforcing vocabulary like over, under, through, above, and below.

Next, students practiced sequencing skills and directional vocabulary based on places they know well. “How would you code me to walk to PE?” They also worked with partners to give directions, create a sequence, and layout a map of a backyard. They used landmarks like 3D trees, doors, benches, rocks, and bushes to navigate their maps with partners.

Finally, students programmed directions into a robotic mouse while using coding words like bug, pattern, program, and test. It’s been a great unit to get students interested in STEAM learning!
